A giveaway can introduce people to a relevant product or experience. A stronger relationship depends on what follows: clear terms, fair administration, a useful prize and dependable fulfilment.
Free entry or a prize does not create an obligation to praise the brand. Treat participation, independent recommendation and lasting customer interest as different things.
Choose the purpose and the right offer
Plans for increasing brand visibility and awareness should identify the intended audience and a useful next step. A broad prize may attract many entrants with little interest in the product. A smaller relevant experience may be easier for the business to deliver well.
For a hypothetical craft business, a place in a beginner workshop could introduce the service more directly than an unrelated expensive device. Check capacity, access needs and travel conditions before promoting the offer.
Separate sampling, draws and competitions
A sample given to eligible recipients, a random prize draw and a judged competition have different administration and legal questions. Define the actual mechanism before writing the social post.
The UK’s CAP promotional marketing rules provide one jurisdiction-specific reference for significant conditions and fair administration. Requirements differ by location, promotion type and audience. Have the actual structure and rules checked before release, including whether the mechanism creates a regulated lottery.
Make the important terms visible
- Who runs the promotion and who may enter?
- What exactly is offered, how many prizes exist and what costs remain?
- When does entry close, in which time zone?
- How is a valid entry made and how are winners selected?
- How will people be contacted, and what happens if a winner cannot be reached?
- How will the prize be delivered and by when?
Provide the full rules in an accessible maintained location. Keep significant limitations clear in the initial communication rather than reveal them only after entry. Check the current rules of each platform and do not assume that every tagging or sharing requirement is permitted.

Design for interest beyond the prize
Explain the product, experience or customer question that makes the offer relevant. Give people a useful way to learn more without implying that they must subscribe to every channel.
Separate entry administration from optional marketing preferences and handle the information appropriately. A participant needs a clear way to understand what happens to their data and which communications they will receive.
Do not turn entries into disguised endorsements
The claim that UGC can be repurposed needs permission and context. A branded hashtag or a public entry does not automatically authorize indefinite paid advertising, substantial edits or use in unrelated campaigns.
Agree the intended reuse with the contributor. Do not make a predetermined positive review the price of entry or present a grateful winner as an independent purchaser. A gift or chance to win can affect how viewers assess a recommendation.
The FTC’s endorsement guidance includes U.S. guidance on social media contests and disclosure. Make the incentive understandable in the relevant content and review the requirements for the actual audience and campaign.
Pick something the business can fulfil

A product sample should include a realistic quantity and relevant use information. A service prize needs scope, booking arrangements and exclusions. Verify stock and delivery commitments before the campaign starts.
Branded Merchandise can be useful when it is something the audience actually wants and can use. Choose quality and relevance rather than assume that a logo on an object guarantees daily exposure or loyalty.
Administer the process consistently
- Test the entry route and link to the rules.
- Keep a record of valid entries using the stated method.
- Apply eligibility and selection rules consistently.
- Contact winners through the stated route and guard against impersonation.
- Deliver the prize and record completion.
- Handle questions, privacy requests and complaints through a named owner.
Do not improvise a new closing date or winner-selection method merely because the response is smaller than expected. Review proposed changes against the rules and applicable requirements.
Measure the relationship after fulfilment
Review relevant entrants, useful follow-up interest, opt-outs, complaints, cost and delivery completion. A follower spike during entry is not evidence of retained customers.
Keep approved social reminders within the real campaign dates using SU Social campaign timing. Stop entry prompts when the promotion closes, and follow through on the commitments that gave people a reason to take part.
